PLOT POINT 1:
Luke Skywalker Hook
WARNING: Spoilers Below
Luke Skywalker
Opening Scene(s) Refresher: Luke helps his aunt and uncle on the farm on Tatooine. This opening scene for Luke, (which comes about 15 minutes into the movie) he helps them purchase new droids (C3PO and R2D2). He also sees the first snippet of Leia’s message (which also happens to be the Inciting Incident) and asks his uncle if he can leave before the harvest.
But how does his introduction accomplish the 8 important elements? Click on each of them below to find out!
Want
Luke wants to leave the farm and start his life on his own.
Normal World
Luke begins on the barren planet of Tatooine, helping his aunt and uncle day to day on their farm.
- What makes this unique to Luke? While Luke's Normal World is meant to be uneventful and ordinary, it's still unique to him. Especially considering he lives on a fictional planet and works with droids (something none of us do on a day to day basis!).
Ghost
Luke's Ghost is the death of his parents, especially his father. (Throughout the series this will grow more complex as we learn who Luke's father is and what happened with him.)
Internal Conflict
A longing for more, though he also has a desire to help/support his aunt and uncle. Also a curiosity and frustration when he discovers Leia's message and can't learn more right away.
External Conflict
An argument about his future with his uncle. A bit of a scuffle with R2D2 in trying to recover Leia's message.
- How does this introduce the Ghost? After their argument, Luke gets up and leaves the dinner table. Then Luke's aunt and uncle explicitly state how much of his father Luke has in him. And that this isn't necessarily a good thing.
Character Traits
Eager - RELATABLE - Luke longs to get off the farm and start his life. Something we have all desired at some point. He's also eager to find answers with R2D2.
Helpful - ADMIRABLE - It's easy to admire how easily and happily Luke is willing to help is aunt and uncle.
Kind - LIKABLE - Luke is uncommonly kind with the droids. We encounter several characters being rough with the droids and treating them unlike humans before Luke welcomes R2D2 and C3PO and treats them with kindness.
Theme
The Theme of hope via Leia's message and Luke's vision for his future is pressented here.
Stakes
Luke wants adventure. The opening scene threatens this when his uncle tells him he needs to stay at the farm for another season.
